Still get the feeling JR will sit on Fleury as backup for rest of the year. Make another cup run and then see what happens over the summer. Worst case is, we lose him in the expansion draft but hey, we dump the 5+ million cap hit. Not necessarily a bad thing.

No, the worst case scenario is Fleury not waiving his NTC and not being able to find a partner to make a trade with. Then we'd be forced to buy him out or trade a pick to Las Vegas so Murray doesn't get selected.

This is not possible. If the Pens still have Fleury come the expansion draft they must protect him.

Buy out

We aren't giving up a pick to Vegas and sitting on 10 million tied up in goalies next year

Rutherford not being worried about it suggests to me he's already talked to Fleury and McFee and Fleury will be in Vegas next season

Learn the rules, Fleury can waive and be exposed if he chooses

I would be just under a 2 million dollar cap hit for 4 years

We would be better off sending vegas a pick then looking to retain on fleury for a summer trade. Keep the cap hit on our team shorter than a buyout. And I see fleury with $2million retained which is about the buyout per year amount being easy to trade.

Would Fleury want to move his young family to Vegas though? And would Vegas even take Fleury over Rust or another young guy?

Knowing JR, if a deals made, it'll be out of left field. Calgary anyone?

After reading through the past few posts worth of comments, and seeing people commenting about the value of Maatta and Fleury, I thought I would add my 2 cents.

Fleury - I think he has some value left, but it is definitely going to take a GM who is willing to take a risk. I think Fleury can still be a mid-tier goalie who won't necessarily win you games on his own, but will keep his team in games and give them a chance to win most nights. We are used to seeing 4-goal Fleury lately, but like other people have mentioned he has never been very good when coming back from layoffs and right now that is what he is doing every time he takes the ice. I think if he gets back to starting every night he will get better. Since he isn't going to get that chance with the Pens again to prove so, that is where it is going to take a GM who is willing to risk that he will do that given the shot.

Maatta - I think Maatta has more value than people give him around here. I think he is still a good defenseman and will still keep growing. I just think that he is a bad fit for this Pens team who puts such an emphasis on speed. Plus I think a change will do him some good mentally as well. What a freaking whirlwind of a start to a career this guy has had. He came into the NHL and had instant success and then was hit with setback after setback physically. I'm not saying he is necessarily unmotivated, but I think a change will push him and help him clear his head. Easy to imagine him being a little dejected with the way things have gone for him since his first year.

Sorry to offend you oh wise one, but I had not read anywhere that a player has the option to waive their draft eligibility.

He'd still have the No Trade clause to work around

Even with a buyout cap hit, plus Murray, plus (Jarry?), that would put the pens around 6.5 million tied up in goalies, which is about right

I definitely don't want to give up a 1st to keep Fleury to trade him later and only get back a 2nd or 3rd

So you believe there is a good chance he will waive to be included in the draft? Otherwise it makes that possibility and your comment completely irrelevant. Any player can waive their NTC or NMC, but I highly doubt any player is doing so for the expansion draft. So in the end, while my comment wasn't accurate, it is more than likely to be the case if the Pens retain Fleury until that point.

"Throw in Carl Hagelin, Chris Kunitz, and Scott Wilson into the left wing mix with Sheary and Guentzel and it makes no sense for the Penguins to pay market value for a pricey winger like Landeskog or Duchene."

I think this is ridiculous. The Pens could absolutely use a player like Duchene on a line w Crosby. For gods sake the guy has has nobodies and ahlers on his line since he came up. I love his goal scoring this year but this guy is a goal scorers best friend, he needs a best friend.

Wouldn't be a 1st. We could just threaten to buyout fleury so their getting the pick for nothing. A 3rd or 4th should do it. Free asset for them.

MAF isn't going to be playing in Vegas.....guaranteed. I wonder if Ottawa could be a destination....maybe a little salary retention? Anybody know what Anderson's status is?

Like someone said before, I'd rather retain salary for 2 than buy-out for 4.
